A wet belt system, also known as a timing belt in oil, or TBIO, is a design used by a number of manufacturers, most notably on certain Vauxhall, Ford, and Alfa Romeo engines, where the timing belt runs inside the engine immersed in oil rather than in a dry environment. It’s a compact and efficient design, but it comes with its own specific maintenance requirements that are often misunderstood.

Wet belts typically have shorter replacement intervals than conventional dry timing belts, and the condition of the engine oil plays a direct role in how quickly the belt and chain guide components degrade.
