The timing belt, also known as the cambelt, is one of the most critical components in your engine. It synchronises the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft, ensuring the engine’s valves open and close at precisely the right moment. If it snaps or slips, the consequences are almost always severe: bent valves, damaged pistons, and in many cases an engine that’s beyond economical repair.

The timing belt gives very little warning before it fails. Replacement at the manufacturer’s recommended interval is essential, and it’s not a job to put off.

How Often Does a Timing Belt Need Replacing?

Replacement intervals vary by manufacturer and engine, typically falling between 40,000 and 80,000 miles or every four to five years, whichever comes first. Age matters as much as mileage, as the belt degrades over time regardless of how far the vehicle has travelled. If you don’t know when yours was last replaced, it’s worth finding out.

What We Replace

When replacing a timing belt, we recommend replacing the full kit (belt, tensioner, and idler pulleys) and the water pump at the same time where it’s driven by the belt. The labour involved in accessing these components is substantial, and replacing ancillary parts at the same time avoids the cost of returning to the same job prematurely.
